All Seagate Exos Part numbers (Current and EOL)

As hard drive technology evolves, new products come to market and part numbers change. Seagate Exos is no exception. Part numbers change on average every 2 quarters, with some new part numbers being introduced every 6 months and some old ones being made EOL

We have tried to include all Seagate Exos part numbers in this list. It is still a work in progress and we will keep adding more part numbers to it.

Most exos are 7200 RPM and have 256MB cache. Most of the new part numbers are now FastFormat - meaning they ship as 512e by default, but can be formatted to 4Kn. This eliminates the need for multiple SKUs in 512e, 4Kn and 512n. 512n is a very old format and in most applications 512e can be used instead of 512n, so there are no new 512n part numbers

In terms of encryption there are 3 Part numbers  - non- SED Part Numbers which have no encryption and are the most popular, SED Part Numbers which are self-encrypted and SED-FIPS Part Numbers which are self-encrypted and use the FIPS Algo. SED-FIPS are usually only available on SAS and not on SATA. For both SAS and SATA, the models without SED are the most popular.

All about the Seagate 2X18 Mach.2 drive with dual actuators

It was almost a year ago when Seagate unveiled the specifications for the Mach.2 drive and planned to launch only SAS drives that would present themselves to the host as 2 LUNs. Since SATA 's specifications do not allow for multiple LUNs, there was no plan to bring a SATA drive to market.

A year later they have now launched dual actuator drives with both SATA and SAS interfaces. With SAS the drive still presents itself as 2 LUNs, but with SATA the internals are managed by the drive and the SATA drive presents itself to the host as a single 16/18TB drive.

Before we look at the drive specifications, a little background on the benefits of Dual Actuator (or in some years Multi Actuators) drives.

As HDD capacities increase and transfer rates stagnate, dual actuator drives solve this problem.

HDD recording technologies such as energy- assisted magnetic recording have given us larger HDDs - at the time of writing, 24 TB and very soon there will be 28-30 TB HDDs.

However, the recording breakthroughs have had no impact on transfer rates. The end result: we have larger hard drives that are just as slow as their smaller counterparts. To avoid this bottleneck, the transfer rate must be increased. By using 2 independent actuators and parallel read/write, transfer rates could theoretically be doubled - just like a RAID 0 setup. This is what the dual actuator drive tries to achieve.

SAS is represented as 2 LUNS, SATA as a single drive

Seagate's literature talks about 2 LUNs for the SAS drive, so your host will see 2 logical units, but SATA cannot have multiple LUNS, so SATA works similarly to RAID0, where a single block device is represented to OS.

Part numbers and encryption options

For 2X18, There are 2 capacities listed on the datasheet - 16TB and 18TB. SATA has only 1 single variant, Standard FastFormat. It is shipped as 512e but can be formatted to 4Kn. SAS will have 2 variants - the standard model and the SED model , both with FastFormat. Currently there are no SED-FIPS models.

Almost Double the transfer rates, double the random read IOPS

let’s compare X18 ( single Actuator ) drive performance with 2X18 ( Dual Actuator drive).

  • Max Suistained xfr rate has almost doubled. SATA has a marginally lower XFR rate then SAS.
  • Random Read IOPS have also almost doubled
  • Random write IOPS are almost the same. Most probable reason is that both the X18 and 2X18 have 256MB cache. Write requests are writtent to the cache first and reported to be written.
  • Average latency is also the same for both. Both have the same 7200RPM so the rotational latency is the same for entire Exos series.

Going forward as the hard drive capacities increase,vendors will have to find ways to increase the transfer rates. Its just a matter of time before other vendors come up with multi actuator drives also as nobody wants bigger, slower drives.

WD and Seagate HDD Limited Warranty Disclosure on Specs sheets

The two industry giants- Seagate and WD do offer a limited warranty for their hard drives, but this limitation has not been officially mentioned on their websites for years now .

We as a partner get a diminished value of the drive with each passing year and often have angry customers claiming that the warranty should be complete without such a limitation, as there is no mention of it on the manufacturer's website

This has now changed. Both Seagate and WD have started mentioning the "Limited Warranty" in their technical data sheets - a very welcome change. Customers have a right to this transparency - they need to know what they are buying and under what conditions

The number of SKUs is significantly lower on this platform thanks to Seagate FastFormat, which lets you quickly format a drive to 512e or 4Kn. Seagate ST20000NM002D vs. ST20000NM003D vs. ST20000NM005D

All three are dual port X20 20TB SAS drives with Fast Format. The default sector size on all 3 is 512e and can be formatted to 4Kn. The difference between the 3 is the encryption ST20000NM002D is the standard model - this is the most popular model that you will find in most cases in stores. ST20000NM003D is SED (Self Encrypting Drive) and ST20000NM005D is SED with FIPS Algo. These 2 are often out of stock and must be ordered in multiples of 20 according to Seagate's MOQ

Both are SATA X20 20TB fast format hard drives. ST20000NM007D is the standard model - this is what you will find in the channel. ST20000NM000D is the SED ( self encyrpting drive) and MOQ applies to this model

Exos 18TB SATA now has 4 models- 2 on X18 platform and 2 of X20 platform. ST180000NM000J and ST18000NM001J belong to the X18 platform, while ST180000NM003D and ST18000NM004D belong to the X20 platform. This is always the case when the medium capacity is available on 2 platforms, e.g. 16TB is available on the X16 and X18 platform, 18TB is available on the X18 and X20 platform

What is an SED ( Self encrypting Drive)

What is a self-encrypting drive (SED)

A self-encrypting drive (SED) is a drive with a built-in encryption mechanism so that all data written to the drive is automatically encrypted.

The encryption hardware is built into the drive, including a processor - you do not need any software to encrypt the data. Further the Encryption key (DEK) used to encrypt (and decrypt) data is stored on the hard drive too.

This means that the drive requires no input from the user to encrypt or decrypt the data - and that's exactly what happens while the drive is powered on and unlocked - the encryption and decryption is completely transparent to the user. It is done automatically because the key is stored on the hard disk, always available to the encryption system.

SED secures your data at rest. Online, unlocked hard drives are not.

So for a user accessing this powered-on, unlocked hard disk (whether legitimate or malicious), there is virtually no encryption - because even though the hard disk stores the data in encrypted form, it decrypts it and reads it back to you using the DEK it already has. You don't have to know the DEK to access your data.

So where is the security? Well, the security kicks in when you turn off the drive. When you turn it off, the drive locks itself. And when you turn it back on, it will not just use the DEK to encrypt/decrypt the data. It will ask you for an AEK - an authentication encryption key.

If you have the AEK, enter it and the drive will unlock and reappear to the user as a normal disk. If you have lost your AEK, there is no way to recover your data.

This is called securing your data at rest. If your drive is powered off (at rest) , you can be sure that without the AEK, no one can access the data stored on the drive.

If both DEK and AEK are stored on SED disk, how can it be safe?

Both the DEK and the AEK are stored in a special area on the disk that OS cannot access, so there is no way to recover the DEK and the AEK. Also, the DEK is stored in encrypted form, so technically you need the encrypted DEK and the KEK (the key used to encrypt the DEK) as well as access to the algorithm used to encrypt it in order to access the data.

Although there is some proof that a brute force attack MAY works, no actual attack has been reported, so SED drives are considered secure.

SED drives allow for fast erasure - as fast as it takes to erase a 128 or 256-bit key.

With traditional drives, it takes several writes to the entire drive to irretrievably erase all the data on the disk. So with a NON-SED drive, you must erase and write to the entire drive multiple times to ensure that all previous data cannot be recovered.

With SED, you do not have to worry about deleting the encrypted data. You only delete the encryption key - the DEK, so erasing the drive is very quick. Deleting the DEK generates a new DEK, so the drive can be reused .

All in all, SED drives are great for backing up your data at rest - just remember to keep your AEK in a safe place, or you might lock yourself out of your own drive one day.

What is WD ArmorCache and OptiNAND

What is WD ArmorCache

In a nutshell - WD ArmorCache is a non-volatile cache in hard drives that improves performance and reduces the risk of data loss associated with traditional DRAM based caching.

Traditional solutions - DRAM caching - small, expensive and volatile

Traditionally, hard drives relied on the expensive DRAM for caching data and optimizing write performance. However, DRAM is volatile, so in the event of an emergency power off (EPO) , there is a risk of losing the data in DRAM, which has not yet been written to the drive. You can, of course, disable the write cache, but that would also mean that the drive would not perform as well as when the cache is enabled.

So traditionally, one was  to choose between performance and data loss protection. With write cache enabled (WCE), the drive would use the DRAM cache and operate at optimal speed, but with the risk of data loss in the event of an EPO. With write cache disabled (WCD), the drive would be protected from data loss in the event of an EPO, but performance would be limited to spinning drive rates.

WD ArmorCache - Non-volatile cache that provides performance and data protection.

All of this changes with WD's OptiNAND. OptiNAND uses a large non-volatile memory on the drive. It optimizes write performance by using DRAM as a cache. So, when the drive is powered up, performance is on par with WCE, well it is WCE technically as DRAM caching is enabled.

In the event of an emergency power off (EPO), the contents of DRAM are written to non-volatile memory (NVM) using the power of the spinning disk, so the data is protected. Since NVM can hold the data for a very long time without needing power , as soon as the drive is powered up again , the data can be transferred from NVM to the drive.

What ArmorCache has enabled is the performance of WCE and protection of WCD- all with the clever use of NVM cache.

WD 22TB and 26TB Ultrastar Launched

Back in May, WD announced 22TB and 26TB drives, and these drives are now commercially available in the Middle East .

Ultrastar 22TB HC570 drives

HC570 is the 10-disk CMB drive that also uses OptiNand just like the 20TB drive. As with the other Ultrastar drives, it is a 7200 RPM drive with similar transfer rates, available in SAS (WUH722222AL5201, WUH722222AL5204) and SATA interfaces ( WUH722222ALE6L1, WUH722222ALE6L4) with various encryption options.An MTBF of 2.5 million hours and a 5-year limited warranty are standard across the Ultrastar platform, and the 22TB is no exception.

Ultrastar 26TB HC670 Drives

The 26TB SMR drive (ULtraSMR, as WD calls it) is also a 10-platter drive, but can accommodate more data in an overlapping pattern, resulting in a 26TB capacity. Cloud service providers and large data centers would be the ideal customers for these 26TB drives.

Optinand - a game changer for WD
Starting with the 20TB drives, WD began using large NAND flash in the drives to store metadata, improve performance and increase data security. NAND is cheaper than DRAM and non-volatile, so the advantages of unit NAND are obvious. Some of the metadata traditionally stored on hard disks is stored on NAND, which means more space is available on spinning disks and the metadata can be read faster because NAND is faster than spinning disks. NAND can store up to 100MB of data if the drive unexpectedly loses power. This means that your drive will not lose data in the event of an emergency power failure, even if write cache is enabled.

OptiNAND will be used in all large-capacity WD drives given the benefits it offers.

Seagate ST10000NM001G vs ST10000NM018G

Seagate is transitioning many hard drives from the X16 platform (with 16TB as the highest capacity) to the X18 platform (with 18TB as the highest capacity). 10TB is no exception. The ST10000NM001G of the X16 platform has been discontinued, and the new part number is ST10000NM018G of the X18 platform.

The only difference that can be seen from the datasheet is the transfer rate. Since the X18 is the newer platform, it has a slightly better transfer rate ( 270MB/s vs 245 MB /s Max suistained xfr)

TLDR :ST16000NM002G belongs to the X16 platform and ST16000NM004J belongs to the newere X18 platform with better transfer rates.

Seagate is discontinuing the 16TB drives on the X16 platform, which is understandable since they had 16TB on both the X16 and X18 platforms and that duplication had to go at some point. X18 and X16 are almost identical in terms of cache, MTBF and warranty, etc., but the transfer rates of X18 are slightly better. Since X18 is a newer platform, buyers should go for X18 if it is compatible with their device.
