Technically, snapshots work with data pointers so that the same data is not saved twice and storage space is used efficiently. For example, on January 1, you had 100 MB of data. On January 2, you deleted 10 MB and added 30 MB of new data, so your storage space is 120 MB. With snapshots, your total storage footprint is only 130 MB. With those 130 MB, you can restore your 100 MB from January 1 and the 120 MB from January 2 ( Since there is 90MB of common data between 2 data sets, add 10MB to this and you get Jan1 data, add 30MB to this and you get Jan2 data) . Snapshots are great for protecting against accidental deletion or modification of data and also provide protection against ransomware
